Ear infection medicines cost Rs 8,- 000 a year in India, a survey said on Tuesday, as the government struggles to meet demand.
According to a report by the Indian Medical Association, the average cost of the medication for the two years of a patient’s life is Rs 8-8.5 lakh.
The association, which is the apex body of Indian medical professionals, said it has a list of all medicines sold in the country.
“A total of 18 ear infections medicines are sold in our country, but the actual cost for a patient is Rs 1.8 lakh.
If the patient is in an advanced state, there is a very high chance of death due to infection,” said Dr Ramesh Kumar, president of the association.
As per a 2014 study, the mortality rate for ear infections in India was 1.5 per 1,000 patients.
